Step-by-Step Revisited - Contest
Back by popular demand we are having another Step by Step contest. These are very helpful for the beginner face painters. We suggest you send in three to five photos along with a text description of each step.
Contests ended at the end of April 2002

1) Apply sparkle white base. With a thick
blusher brush, mist with water and gently load brush with sparkle fuscia
paint. Lightly brush the pink paint in a circular motion over the cheeks
and the chin.
|
2) Using a medium sable brush, paint a blue
curve over each eye. Use a quick sweep to avoid any jagged edges. Using
a sponge, cut in half, use one edge of sponge and pull paint down
(dragging). Keep the top edge crisp.
|
3) Using the same blue paint and a medium
round brush, make the markings on the side of the face, twisting and
turning the brush as you follow the curves down. Add the red stars for
impact, and paint lips in red.
|
4) For that extra special impact, such as The Golden Jubilee or Fourth of July sprinkle loose polyglitter. | |

| 1) Apply base. Start with palest colour, in centre of face. With a clean sponge apply second colour and blend in well. Use the white sponge to do this using very light circular strokes. Ensure that all the nooks, crannies & the brows are covered. Keep the top lip colour clean & white. (James does not like paint too close to his eyes, they start to water) |
2) With two fresh sponges apply red & orange alternatively around the edge
of the face. If not going into the hair, create a definite edge, with the
sponge to 'finish' the face. Blend these colours well, again using the soft
circular motion. Try to ensure the colours do not muddy each other. |
3 Start adding detail with a brush, blending each stroke. Note, all lines come from a central point on the face. Changing to a contrasting colour, in this case blue, begin the eye detail. Work from the inside of the eye up and over the brows to the temple, blend down onto the eyelid. |
4) Finish the eyes with a line under, working from the outer edge to the
nose, down the nose, flattening the brush at the end to create the nostrils.
Join nostrils under the nose and draw a line down the centre of the lips, flattening the brush again at the end. To create the protruding upper lip continue the line at the outer edge of the lip, curving up. Blend using either a brush or a sponge away from the top lip. Add stripes in your contrast colour, again, always working towards the centre point of the face. |
5) Add lower lip in pink, and then the 'fangs' in white. Do this by laying
the brush on the lower lip & drawing down whilst taking the pressure off the
brush. Outline the teeth in black for emphasis. Finish with black dots on
top lip, group them in threes rather than place them singly. Add
contrasting yellow dots around the perimeter of the painting. Finally add
glitter to some of the 'high' points on the face. All brushwork on this face
was done with a mid size pointed brush. |

1) Apply base, white, then pink, then yellow to blend the two.
|
2) Using medium sable brush, paint black above eyes, try to follow curve
of the forehead and eyebrow. Paint curves on forehead in one stroke, from
thin to wide. Start with the sable brush flattened, then press brush to
face to widen stroke. Paint nose, split lip, and curves for jaw of cat.
Blend out the outside edge of the eye, and jaw with a half sponge, almost
dry. One side done to show.
|
3) getting your model to look slightly up, paint under the eye. Add more
expressive lines around the face, working outwards from small to large.
Again try to follow curve of face.
|
4) Add some white dots, and bronze accents to highlight. Complete bottom
lip in bronze.
|
5) Finish off with dots of glitter. Bright, bold and lots of fun.

1) I let the child choose two or three main colors (here it's red, gold,
and black). (my favorite was the young girl who asked for a dragon in
pastel pink and baby blue. she looked adorable with it!) I painted the
belly of the dragon first so the gold wouldn't smear on the red, but you
can't see the gold too well in these pics until it is outlined
later. The belly is a long undulating line. Then paint the head, leaving
room between the jaws for the tongue. Draw the brush back for the horns.
(#4 and #6 round work well for this part).
|
2) Paint the claws, drawing the brush out and away for the points.
|
3) Using black, paint the tongue, and the spikes down the back Parallel
the belly with the red paint, and draw out the brush for the spiky
tail. (You can reverse the order of painting the back & the belly,
depending on the colors and whether they will smear)
|
4) Outline the belly and add scales. A #1 round brush works well. (If the
color of the belly contrasts well with the child's skin, then just add the
scales- an outline won't be necessary.)
|
5) Paint flames in gold shading out to red. Add glitter gel to flames.
Stick on a gem for the eye. (I always let the child pick out which gem
they want for the dragon's eye. They get a kick out of it.)

1) Using a
fine brush loaded with white, sketch a pony's head profile. Do not rinse
your brush, but put it carefully aside! Take another brush, then fill in
the shape with mid-brown.
|
2) Add dark
brown in areas of shading, and smudge to blend in, Add light brown
highlights.
|
3) Use a dry
or slightly damp fine brush to blend in the highlights, and then with a
fine firm brush paint in the eye, mouth and add depth to the nostril and
ear in black paint. I prefer to use cake black for this as it allows a
finer line.
|
4) Using a
medium-fine brush, paint in a shaggy mane in yellow paint.
|
5. Et
voila! The white brush will now be a little dry, so use it to add soft
highlights. Rinse and use only the very tip of the brush to highlight the
eye. Tidy up with the black brush if you need to (!) and add depth to the
mane. Change the colours, add a unicorns horn .... it's so quick to
do..enjoy

1) Stick on gems in red, white and blue to make butterfly body. Using the
curve on your sponge, sponge part semi-circles round face.
|
2) With sponge loaded with white, work from blue to centre of face. Drag
the blue colour to the centre with your sponge, to blend. This very simple
technique is sometimes known as drag blending.
|
3) Paint on the outline of the butterfly wings in red. Drag blend inwards
again gently with a half sponge. Take a broad flat brush, load with blue.
Using the brush edge on outline the wings in blue. Drag blend with the
brush slightly inwards. Turn the brush edge on, and make some fine blue
lines on wings.
One wing is left with just the red brushwork, no blending so you can see
the stages better.
|
4) Painting lips in red. With a good brush make swirls in white on the
wings.
|
5) Make body for butterfly in blue. Paint some stars round the outside
in white. Finish off with silver glitter.
This is a nice design for the 4th July, or the Golden Jubilee
celebrations this summer.

5) For the extra touch ask the child their team number and
colors and add that. Of course some flames on the ball will get you extra
points.

1) Lightly base the background of the face using Silver
(in the middle) and Gold (around the outside). Sponge in the three
colours (I have used pink, yellow, and blue) where the wings will be; and
leaving a crisp edge at the top of the wings, blend sides and bottom into
the background base.
|
2) With a medium round brush, paint the outside of the
wings in black, scrolling down the sides of the face. Using the inside of
the eyes as a guide, paint thinner lines from each 'join' towards the
centre.
|
3) These lines will act as a guide for the pattern on
the wings. Paint the first 'line' pattern to correspond with the outside
shape of the wing. The second 'line' is painted as shown. It will give
the appearance similar to that of a 'spider web'.
|
4) Carefully fill-in with the black between these two
lines to create a solid block pattern within the wings.
|
5) Using a thin brush, paint highlights and scrolls
around the wings and body area. Finish by outlining the lips with a fine
black line, and fill-in with cream silver. The black and white brush
strokes give high impact to the face, and the design is quick and simple
to paint, giving an unusual alternative to the conventional 'butterfly'.
I am sure many will adapt this design, or even improve it! Unlike most
butterfly faces, this one does not need the use of glitter to give the
"wow" effect!

Follow the way the white paint is placed. With fine medium round brush

from outside edge drag brush inwards, then rotate your brush so it makes a

the face with the gold to fit face contours.

Step 2) With a half sponge apply fuschia, with lilac in the hollows of the
cheeks. Blend with the sponge used for applying gold with no more paint
added to it. Apply lilac above the eyes with the same sponge. Blend with
the sponge used for applying the white in the same way.
|
Step 3) Load your brush, in this case a snazaroo yellow one, as shown in
the photo. Yellow, not too wet and tipped with some premixed fuschia. To
make a flower press the brush edge on to the face. Arrange the flowers in
small groups. Do smaller flowers in the same way using the tip of the
brush.
|
Step 4) starting with the flowers you did first, which should be dry,
apply purple centres to the flowers. With green do leaves around the
flowers, bringing them down the nose a little is nice. Make the leaves in
the same way as the flowers, pressing the brush to the face, but do the
stems with a fine brush. Paint the lips in fuschia, and smudge them a
little with the lilac sponge.
|
Step 5) Highlight the leaves a little with white, and accent with silver
glitter, away from your flowers so it does not loose the effect of the
nice brushwork.

On this contest there are no beginner categories, however we will post the age of children under 17 so you can take this into consideration during the voting process. As always, you can send in your photos by e-mail electronically or you can drop them in the regular mail (SNAZAROO, 1214 Metro Park Blvd., Suite 201, Lewisville, TX 75057 USA) and we will do the scanning for you. ONLY ONE PRIZE PER PERSON. We want to spread the prizes around. All prizes will be given out but the "excess prizes" will be given to the next person in line during the vote process. It is possible because of these new guidelines that 4th or 5th place actually receives a prize.
Other rules.... read this carefully!
1) You may not enter any photo that you have entered before in any step by step
contest.
2) You may not use acrylics or any non-FDA approved face paint in any form. You are otherwise
allowed to use any FDA compliant face paint.
3) If your photo is very fuzzy or out of focus it will not be entered. There is no excuse
here because we are willing to scan the photo(s) for you.
4) Do not take your photo from 20 feet away. Get as close to your art work as possible. We
want to see the art not your entire living room.
for other photography suggestions we hope you will look at http://www.snazaroo.com/faqphotos.htm
Your submitted photo can be on any part of the body (as long as it is PG-13 rated).
