I think most are aware that running a discussion list can be a daunting project. Where we try to make it as user friendly as possible at times it will still be frustrating for some. One thing you as a user should keep in mind and that is this is a free service. We have to remind everyone of this all of the time. If you have been involved in computers or software for longer than ten years you know what has happened to so-called "technical support". At first when you spent hundreds and hundreds of dollars on a piece of software you got excellent free technical support, via phone, e-mail or on-line. Well... as the industry has become more and more competitive, one of the things that has taken the greatest hit, is technical support. Now even when you buy an expensive piece of software, general you are best served by doing a search through the companies archives or their FAQ list.

This now dominos down to this list and for this reason I am addressing a FAQ (frequently asked question) on technical support for this list. No doubt, this will NOT be a comprehensive list but I will try to address the most asked questions. Since this is a free service, and I have to keep saying this over and over, we simply do not have the resources to respond to individual e-mails concerning individual technical support. We try our best. As a resource we have added Phyllis Schiavone schiavone@systemetrix.com as a technical support person on the discussion list team. IF YOUR QUESTION IS NOT ANSWERED BELOW, you might talk to Phyllis.

The "starting line" for most problems, can be found at the discussion list "facepainthq" that can be found at www.snazaroo.us/email.htm  but the easiest way to get to this location, other than clicking on the above link is to simply go to the home page at http://www.snazaroo.us/ and then click on either of the clown photos at the top of this page (we will call this the clown link). From here you can resolve all kinds of problems.

1) How do I join the discussion list for face painters? 1) just add your e-mail below

If you want to join the world's largest e-mail discussion list for face painters  then enter your e-mail address in the box to the left. Share your photos with others or if you have a need ask for help and the painters will e-mail you a face painting idea for your upcoming event.

2) How do I leave the discussion list for face painters? Go to http://groups.google.com/group/facepainthq and remove your e-mail address

3) How do I switch to the digest version? The difference from the regular subscriber and the digest version is a regular subscriber gets their mail as they are sent out. A digest member, gets the messages sent out once per day. This way you do not get interrupted during the day with e-mails. This is the preferred way to receive the e-mails by most. Again, go to the clown link, enter your e-mail address and enter the "your settings" tab. Look in the "status" drop down and you will get many options on how to receive e-mails from the list. Select the one you want and then save them.

4) There are many ways to get the e-mails, how do I choose? 1) "receive the mails as contributed" does exactly that. As a member sends the e-mail to the list, you then receive it in a matter of seconds. 2) "digest, one message daily" will send you all the e-mails, linked together, once per day. With this option you will receive one very long e-mail and often you get both the text version as well as the html version. You will get both if the sender sent the message in html version. WE CAN NOT CONTROL THIS. Either scan through them or switch to the mime version. 3) "mime, digest", this is the one I personally suggest. This will give you each e-mail for the day as an attachment. You get to scan through the subject lines and if a subject line catches your eye, then click on it and it will open like a regular e-mail. 4) "index" means once per day you get only a list of the subject lines, no other e-mail and 5) "normal" which means you are a member of the list but get no e-mail at all. We suggest you use this when you are on vacation or want a break for a while on your e-mails. No matter what you do, make sure you save your settings.

5) If you are new at signing up, why don't my e-mails go directly to the list? As a factor to HELP control spam all first time e-mails go directly to moderation. We want to make sure that the list is not getting bombarded by spam or e-mails that do not meet the list guidelines. After you send a few messages, That are approved, then your e-mails can go directly to the list uncensored.

6) What does it mean to "be moderated"? If you do not follow the list rules, your e-mails are sent to the moderator to be reviewed before they go to the list. Generally, when you are sent for moderation, this lasts for a period of your next 20 e-mails to the list or for a period of 30 days. This depends on the severity of how you broke the list rules.

7) What are the list rules and who gets to make the rules? The list rules can be found at http://www.snazaroo.us/faqlist.htm The list rules are made up by the list owner (Gary Cole), the discussion list team ( http://www.snazaroo.us/faqteam.htm ) and in general by the members of the list.

8) If I have a complaint, to whom do I send it to? Send your concerns to the appropriate list team member. Read http://www.snazaroo.us/faqteam.htm and they will either help you or forward you to the correct team member.

9) What do I do if I change my e-mail address? Simply find the instruction above to leave the list from the old e-mail address and then join again under the new e-mail address.

10) How can I get dropped from the list? Why do I no longer get the e-mails from the list? There are only three reasons for you no longer get e-mails. I'll list these in order 1) You bounce too many e-mails. If we send the e-mail to your server FIFTEEN TIMES and the e-mails bounce back, then you automatically get dropped from the list. This is a problem at your server end. You need to be using a reliable server for your e-mails. 2) You dropped yourself from the list. 3) We dropped you from the list for violating the list rules. This is HIGHLY unlikely as in all the years of the list we only have dropped two people. If you were dropped from the list because your server bounced too much and you want to be back on the list, then simply sign on again as a new member.

11) Why do my e-mails not get through, or why do they bounce back? This can happen for a number of reasons. 1) your e-mails are being moderated so there will be a delay in the time you send to the time they are approved, 2) your e-mail was rejected by the moderator for not following the list rules, 3) you had an attachment (no attachments are allowed), 4) you had too many lines of previous text. When you forward from a previous persons' e-mail (more than ten lines), your e-mail will bounce back. Instead forward only minimal text from the previous e-mail. We do this to keep the costs of the list down and to prevent forward after forward from going back through the list. 5) Sometimes, with certain e-mail software, the message is bounced back with an error message stating that no attachments are allowed when you feel there is no attachment of any kind. If you are having this problem you might try changing your settings. In other words, when you send a message to the list, send the message as "plain text" rather than "rich text". The list server, with some e-mail software packages, reads this as an attachment.

12) If no attachments are allowed on the list, then why do I see an attachment every once in a while? Despite our best efforts, the staff at the list service (Sparklist) still get some e-mails with attachments through. This might be spam, a photo or even a potentially hazardous attachment. These are high tech days and both the spammers and those that produce virus' are very cleaver.  Generally these get through because they grab an e-mail address and member's name and disguise their e-mail to look like it came from a list member. If they can mimic your code and both your name and e-mail address is approved to allow e-mails then these get through. If you suspect this send an e-mail directly to abuse@email.sparklist.com  NEVER OPEN AN ATTACHMENT THAT COMES VIA THE LIST AS THIS LIST SHOULD NOT ALLOW ANY ATTACHMENTS.

13) Can I get a virus from the list? We would like to say no because we do not allow attachments, but the honest truth is yes. For this reason we strongly suggest every member of the list have good virus protection. There is a lengthy FAQ on this at http://www.snazaroo.us/faqvirus.htm

14) Is there further tech support? Again, this list is a free service and there are no funds to support a technical support staff. Most members of the discussion list team work for free on a volunteer basis. We do not PROMISE technical support. With this understanding, there is a tech support member of our team and that team member can be reached by sending an email to Phyllis Schiavonne at schiavone@systemetrix.com

15) How do I get technical support from the discussion list provider? Sorry but there is no technical support from the actual list hosting service. Instead, contact Phyllis as listed in #14.

16) What about virus protection? You can get free virus protection through http://www.grisoft.com/ If you have the funds I recommend Norton Internet Security with spam protection that can be purchased from http://www.norton.com/ (Symantec Corporation). You can also get virus removal tools for free at Symantec at http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/tools.list.html . You also can get a free firewall protector at http://www.sygate.com/

17) What about spam protection? You can get a free mail guard/spam detector from http://www.mailwasher.net/ I recommend the spam software from Norton.

18) What about spyware? Spyware is software or cookies that attack your software and gather information. It can do everything from hold all of your key strokes or alert companies what web sites you visit for marketing purposes. They can do everything from pass on personal information to slow down your computer to cause serious damage to your hard drive or operating system. We strongly suggest you use some type of preventative action to keep spyware off of your computer. You can get free spyware at http://www.spybot.com/ or you can do a search on the internet and many quality software packages are out there to prevent spyware from being on your computer.

19) My e-mails to the list are followed by a rejection e-mail from Sparklist. We have addressed this many times with the list server which is Sparklist and it seems to fall on deaf ears. The reality is, the e-mails are actually getting to the list. I know this is frustrating but we have been butting our heads against the wall for months and they just ignore us. Maybe you can convince them. See their web site and complain at http://www.sparklist.com

20) I am getting two (or more) copies of e-mails from the list, why? There are several possibilities for this problem. First check the "rule settings" on your inbox that sorts your mail. If you have more than one rule affecting the sparklist emails, your rules may make extra copies of your emails. Second and more likely you have recently changed your email address. If you signed up under a new email address and did not close out your previous email, you could be getting multiple copies. If you wish to delete the old address to avoid this problem see technical hint #10.

Further questions, suggestions or comments can go to the technical support team member at tech@snazaroo.com, directly to the list at facepaint@email.sparklist.com  or to gary@snazaroo.com.
